Whole House Color Palette

Part of me feels like you should just be able to throw in all the colors you love into your house and it should all just somehow go together.  That’s what I did here:overall home color palletI didn’t think about an overall scheme and just put it all together… and I’m left with every color in the rainbow minus purple (seriously, sing the rainbow song if you don’t believe me!).  Does it go together?  Hrm, maybe.

One of the things I learned from our first home is that you have to be intentional about the feel of your home.  And if you want the styles of the rooms to flow into one another, you have to stop, step back and think about the house as a whole and not just think about individual rooms.

I think I’ll start with lots of whites and natural woods and just take it from there.  My favorite homes don’t necessarily stick to an overall theme or color palette, they just seem to “go” but I bet there are some intentional decisions at play there.  Gotta keep studying the images I love!

Do you have a whole house color palette?  Any tips on how to develop one?

  1. I love bathing my home in all out rainbow colors…I keep them grounded with my neutral backdrop of grey and white walls with black trim…makes all the components look like artwork!

Can’t wait to see how yours come together!

Thank you for visiting and hope to see you back soon love!

A neutral background is great advice! I wish I could throw everything together but I’m so all over the place it’d be a hot mess fast :P

  2. That’s really good advice. We actually are in the process of buying our first home… and I’m excited to try decorating it. I’ll definitely keep this post in mind…. I tend to just throw everything together without thinking first….

Some people can rock the throw-everything-together look, I’m just not one of ‘em ; ] Good luck in finding a place!

  3. When we first moved into our house I was so excited to finally have walls to paint that I went a little nuts… then I created a little mockup of my house by room color and saw them all next together and realized it was TOO MUCH. Now I’m mostly whites, grays, and blues with accents in each room. Whew. Much better. haha

Oh the power of technology! When I get really scared I try to do mock-ups on photos in Photoshop and it’s usually pretty revealing. Whites, grays, and blues sound like a grounding color palette.
