The Turkish Towel that Launched a Bathroom and Pick a Mat

I have to admit, of all the stores from our Inspired Design Challenge series, I was most excited about West Elm.  Apparently, one of the 30 signs you’re nearing 30 is “graduating” from Ikea to West Elm.  Let’s just say I never got my Ikea diploma and I’ve never bought a thing from West Elm… until now!

 Inspired Design Challenge

For this challenge, I used these Turkish hand towels as my inspiration to tackle our main bathroom.  They’re back ordered until September (early birthday present to me?) but they’re mine all mine.  Sort of.  Unless they go out of stock forever.  I’m crossing my fingers!

Before we get to my inspiration board, let’s go through the images that most inspire me.  You can see from my inspiration images I like both light and bright bathrooms and dark and moody ones, too.  However, since our space has no natural lighting, I decided to go for light and bright.

Here’s what I came up with:black white and grey bathroom mood board - Brave New Home

If you’re trying to think back to or search the blog for a photo of our main bathroom you won’t find one.  I’m saving that puppy for when I can quickly follow up with an after photo :P  It’s not that bad but let’s just say I picked some serious misguided paint colors (yes, plural) which would have you guessing those were the colors that came with the condo when we moved in.  Yeah, that bad.

Now it’s your turn, help me pick a bath mat!  Which of these options would go best with my mostly black and white bathroom mood board?

Option 1: A simple black and white mat

Option 2: A cheerful floral from Target’s Threshold line

Option 3: Something green (not necessarily this mat in particular but you get the point)

Lovely comments so far...

  1. LOVE your inspiration images! And those towels…I’ve loved those forever too. Awesome! I’m leaning toward the yellow…it’d be really bright and fun!

  2. I love those towels too :) Great inspiration images! xo Kristin

  3. I’m loving the yellow and white mat. Turkish towels are the bees knees!!

  4. I like your mood board and can’t wait to see what you do with your bathroom! I’m mostly commenting though to say I read the “30 Signs You’re Nearing 30” list and it made me laugh, mainly because I turned 40 this year and most of it still applies. I haven’t graduated from IKEA to West Elm yet, though. I don’t know what that says about me. Getting the IKEA catalog in the mail every year is even better than getting the Sears Christmas catalog when I was kid, which was a long time ago because I’m 40, ha ha. ;-) (Don’t get me wrong, though – I love me some West Elm!)

Even my mom gets excited about the Ikea catalog! Iono, I still don’t feel like a full fledged adult yet. I don’t know what it will take but I’m just not mentally at that point where I invest in pieces for my home. I liked to remind myself that even designers and home stylists frequent Ikea so we’re in good company : ]

  5. Great inspiration pics, and love your mood board! You’re inspiring me to get moving on my own bathroom. I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for West Elm. Love those towels! Excited to see the finished product. It’s going to look great!

  6. Ok, seriously, I just ordered 2 turkish towels from WE yesterday!! I can’t wait to see how our bathrooms measure up!

    • Jennifer says:

LOL! That is too funny. Are yours back ordered until Sept 10th, too? That’s why I had to delay our super top secret project ; ] And please do vote on a mat—I’d love your input!

Love the bathroom moodboard and I went with the yellow mat!
(And no freakin way that your mom is from Würzburg! Did you see my Instagram? That’s where I went to school in my later teens! Went by train every morning. It’s my favorite town ever and I have so many good memories there. If I ever move back to Germany, that’s where I want to live.)

    • Jennifer says:

Yup! We usually stay outside of Wurzburg with one of my aunts in Kurnach. Wurzburg is a lovely little college town. I have so many prints and postcards from there—if you keep an eye out I’m sure you’ll see them pop up in my decor : ]

  8. I voted for the yellow. I like the all black/cream (or is it white?), but think you need a little yellow love on the floor to wake it up and prevent it from being too stuffy. I adore your moodboard and love that you didn’t just ‘knock off’ a product for the challenge. Nothing wrong with a little knock off, but I love your interpretation. I, too, can’t wait to see.

(P.S. I am slowly playing along at home, but just can’t commit the time for a weekly deadline. Although, I am gleaming some serious inspiration form the stores chosen and your crew’s posts. Thanks for everything!)

    • Jennifer says:

Thanks for the thoughts, Christine! I can always count on you for good design advice. I was kinda thinking that black and white mat would tie the room together more and seal the deal but that the yellow would be fun and like you said, an element from keeping the room from being stuffy (not that I know I could do stuffy even if I tried).

Looking forward to your next Inspired Design Challenge project!

  9. Haha…I don’t think I’ll ever graduate with my Ikea diploma! I still love that place! But seriously…those towels…MEOW! I’ve been obsessively eyeing them waiting for their return to stock as well! Absolutely cannot wait to see your bathroom…now…AND after you give it your fabulous touch. Is it puce? One of the bathroom colors? How about mustard yellow with orange accents? C’mon…you’re killing me here!

    • Jennifer says:

Yeah, I do not see myself ever passing on Ikea anytime in the near future.

I’ll say one of the colors was green…green in a bad way!

  10. Love your board Jen!! I strangely enough like the yellow. And trust me when I say that’s crazy b/c I wear black like 75% of the time.

  11. Okay, I finally caught up to the West Elm challenge, here are my little inspirations:
